H'Atina, a jazz-and soul artist was birthed from a place of iconic entertainment, arts, culture, and film.
She’s destined for stardom and singing is most certainly her calling. Even though she’s surrounded by glitz and glam, H'Atina treads success with ambiguity and modesty. The singer is caregiver to her parents, in addition to working full-time between gigs.
H’Atina takes each step in life like a breath of fresh air, just as her newest single suggests, The Litte Thingz bring joy. H'Atina isn't rushing the process-- She's more in awe with all that she's accomplished.
H'Atina says she was originally a tomboy, which could be attributed to her father's hopefulness of having a baby boy-- H'Atinas mother insisted that she learned to dance to offset her toughness, so H'Atina learned modern, jazz and ballet all through middle school. "I always loved music, of course," says H'Atina. "I'd always mimic the singers that I loved at that time of growing up, and my parents were kinda old souls. You know my parents grew up listening to the things their parents listened to, of course-- From, literally, Johnny Mathis, to like, Kenny Rogers," she giggled.
H'Atina has a shyness about her that quickly dissolves when she sings. "I was told by many friends and family; I had a great voice... didn't grow up singing in church, or nothin like that," she explained. "I was just told I had a great voice, so I ended up entering a couple competitions and stuff when I was still in middle school. My mom found out about it by the time it was time for me to go to high school, and she found out about Los Angeles County High School of the Arts. I had decided-- She (my mom) thought I was gonna go for dance, and I had decided to go for music because you can only pick one discipline."
The singer auditioned at the school, and she got in, and that education lit her interest in music.
Finding balance to do all the things like touring across the globe to perform, caring for elderly parents, and running a business hasn't been easy, but it's doable. “I live by my calendar. If it's not on my calendar, it's not happening,” says H'Atina when asked about finding balance. "I have to have a schedule. I am very task oriented, and I have a fulltime job, and it's a fulltime job taking care of my parents too. I have aging parents, and so I look after them. I take them to their appointments, and everything too. I still find for my own personal ministry, my writing and my studio time, and all that. I find time for it. I make time."
H'Atina's parents co-funded her sophomore project, and her son wrote the lyrics that became the title of the album, "Like A Butterfly..." "With all of us, I don't think I'll be able to pay them back for anything. I mean, they gave me life," she spoke benevolently about her parents. "I can't pay them back for that. I can't, but I will always continue to reciprocate. They are always there for me so I'm always going to be there for them however I can, and I'm always going to show my gratitude for everything they've ever done for me and, a big part of that is making sure that they are a part of what I do."

And speaking of what she does, H'Atina released Little Thingz, produced by Soki. The track is reminiscent to the 80's Sade era when R&B was either as provocative as a one-night stand or light as a good mood, with an emotive visual. Though H'Atina has a distinguished soulful voice with the rasp that hits you right at the heartstrings, the limericks mellowed down just a little to deliver a soft and relaxing vibe.
H'Atina released her self entitled album in 2002, Like a Butterfly (EP) 2017, Authentically Me 2020, Journey Respect My Journey 2022 (EP) and Elements of a Real Man 2022 (EP).
H'Atina managed to skirt around genre placement because she doesn't want to be placed in a box... "I like collaborating with others," she said. "I have such a huge appreciation for music."
With that last statement, it was no surprise, that she was excited to work with international producer, Soki, when he contacted her about a collaboration. They worked virtually on a few of her older projects. Soki doesn't produce R&B songs, but he took a liking to H'Atina's style for singing. They've worked together ever since, to create beautiful music that are timeless. "I like exploring. I want to be able to touch as many people as I can, too." H'Atina is planning to release the full length EP, with Little Thingz as the buzzer next month.
H’Atina is performing at the Legends of R&B Tribute Concert August 23, 2025 in Chicago, Illinois.
